CASE STUDY
Theia
A two-part editorial food and portrait shoot featuring the owners of Theia, a Picton-based restaurant and wine bar, for Watershed Magazine.
Sector: Hospitality, Food & Beverage, Editorial Publishing
Transformation: Editorial Food & Portrait Photography for Watershed Magazine
The Tech: Profoto Strobes, Mixed Lighting, Small-Space Photography
The Problem: Extremely Tight Floor Plan & Inconsistent Natural Window Light
The Solution: Exterior Strobe Lighting & Careful Spatial Management

The Challenge
Working Within Intimate Spaces
The primary hurdles were spatial constraints and lighting consistency. Theia operates in a very intimately sized venue, leaving little room to maneuver gear and position subjects. Capturing consistent color tones across the warm wood tables, glassware, and plated food was difficult when relying solely on the venue's shifting natural window light.
The Solution
Exterior Lighting Setup
To maintain a consistent aesthetic regardless of weather, the available window light was supplemented by firing Profoto strobes from outside the building, directly through the exterior glass. This approach allowed for precise control over the exposure and directional shadows falling across the dishes, while crucially keeping the tight interior floor plan completely clear of lighting stands.
The Result
A Natural Culinary Narrative
The exterior strobes successfully mimicked soft, directional window light, capturing crisp details on plated dishes including pasta, shrimp, and carpaccio. The controlled lighting highlighted the rich textures of the wooden tables and illuminated the wine bottles, glassware, and floral arrangements without feeling artificial or staged. The final images provided Watershed Magazine with a cohesive visual spread that accurately translated the restaurant's intimate atmosphere.
