Frank Brothers Guitar Co.: Documenting the Soul of the Workshop

A multi-day editorial commission at the Frank Brothers Guitar Co. workshop in Toronto. The objective was to document the painstaking, high-fidelity process of artisanal guitar construction—from raw lumber selection to the final, high-gloss setup. By navigating a high-activity production floor, we created a visual library that emphasizes the brand’s commitment to old-world craftsmanship and textural detail.

The Challenge

The objective was to document the Frank Brothers process with a serene, sculptural aesthetic that mirrored the high-fidelity nature of their instruments. We wanted to isolate the quiet, intentional moments of the build—the fine textures of the wood, the precision of the hand-tools, and the focused energy of the artisan.

However, the reality of a world-class luthier workshop is a high-activity production environment. It is inherently filled with the necessary "noise" of a working shop: tangled power cords, heavy industrial machinery, and the omnipresent sawdust of a busy day. The challenge was to find a way to visually "silence" that chaos and isolate the artistic moments of the build without losing the authentic, lived-in grit of a real, functioning workshop.

The Solution

We adopted a "Macro-First" strategy to edit the environment through the lens. By employing extremely selective depth of field and tight, intentional framing, we were able to "delete" the distracting workshop backgrounds and focus entirely on the interaction between the artisan’s hands and the raw materials.

Instead of fighting the workshop’s cluttered reality, we curated it. We used wood shavings as a high-contrast textural element and utilized existing task lamps as "Rembrandt-style" lighting sources, creating a dramatic interplay of light and shadow that carved the guitar bodies out of the industrial darkness. This allowed us to achieve a high-end, sculptural look while maintaining the authentic soul of the workshop.

The Result

The final result is a 19-piece high-fidelity editorial suite that successfully bridges the gap between industrial reality and artisanal art. By isolating the quiet, textural moments of the build, we provided the brand with a deep visual narrative that proves the "tenderly made" quality of their instruments.

These assets have redefined the brand’s digital authority, moving their presence away from standard, static product photography and toward immersive storytelling. The collection now serves as a powerful commercial tool, allowing Frank Brothers to showcase the immense human effort and technical precision behind every guitar, reinforcing their position as leaders in the modern luthier community.
