The Challenge

Capturing Slow Movement

Heidi Earnshaw designs and builds ethically made furniture by hand. She doesn't use computers to draft, avoiding automated CNC machines to work in a way that echoes the 1970s—and the 1870s. The challenge was capturing this "slow making" movement for a BESIDE Magazine feature without making the photos feel staged or overly polished. We needed to show the grit, the patience, and the intimate relationship between the maker and the wood.

  • Honoring the Process: Avoiding standard, glossy furniture photography in favor of environmental storytelling that shows the actual physical labor.

  • Working in the Elements: Adapting to an active, natural-light woodworking studio in the Ottawa Valley without disrupting the artist's workflow.

The Solution

Immersive, On-Location Documentary

Instead of bringing in heavy lighting rigs and turning the studio into a set, I spent two days quietly documenting the space as it naturally operated. The focus was on the details: the hand-drawn drafts, the traditional tools, and the physical effort required to work the ethically sourced lumber. By keeping the footprint small, we were able to capture the authentic rhythm of the studio.

  • Environmental Portraiture: Shooting Heidi in her element, surrounded by the nature and the materials that drive her work.

  • Tactile Focus: Getting close to the manual tools and the raw wood to give the viewer a strong sense of the physical craft.

The Result

An Authentic Editorial Feature

The final images provided a grounded, highly textured visual anchor for Naomi Skwarna’s article in BESIDE Magazine. Instead of just showing off finished furniture, the photo essay successfully transported readers directly into the sawdust and quiet focus of Heidi’s world.

  • Visual Honesty: A compelling set of images that perfectly matched the "slow making" ethos of both the subject and the publication.

  • Editorial Success: A cohesive, immersive story that celebrated traditional craftsmanship without feeling contrived.
